The world, in retrospect, seemed to balance on a fulcrum that year. Analog lingered like the last warmth of evening, while digital dawned in pixels and dial-up tones. The internet, still a newborn, stretched its limbs in millions of households with the screech of a modem. Email addresses became status symbols. A website called "Amazon" sold only books.
