The subtitles were burned in, yellow and jagged. ESub . They weren’t timed correctly. Characters spoke a full second before their mouths moved, or moved in silence, then the words crashed in late, like a car hitting a wall after the sound cuts out.

The 480p resolution stripped the film down to its skeleton. You couldn’t see the polish of Cronenberg’s frames. You saw the idea of the frame. Every scar on James Spader’s character, Vaughan’s limousine, the silver tear of a fender—it all looked like a crime scene photo. Flat. Flash-lit. Real. But that was the magic of it.
