The two form an uneasy road trip bond. Jack’s behavior is erratic – delusional, hyper-alert, prone to violence – but also charismatic. Carol slowly learns the truth: Jack’s entire platoon was killed in Vietnam except him and Ken Boyd (Ford). Jack blames himself and has suppressed the memory of how he survived.
