Ed’s friends notice the change. Marv calls him a fool. Ritchie laughs. Audrey (played with quiet fire) watches him differently. One night, she corners him. AUDREY: “You’re not doing this for them, Ed. You’re doing it because you’re afraid of what happens if you stop.” ED: “What if I’m just the errand boy for some psycho?” AUDREY: “Then at least you’re running.” Ace of Hearts. No addresses. Just a time and a place: the old train yard, midnight. He smiles

He pulls out a blank card. Writes a new address: Audrey’s heart. Marv calls him a fool

More cards arrive. Clubs, Spades, Hearts. Each one a mission: a lonely old woman, a battered young mother, a violinist who’s forgotten how to play. Ed becomes a phantom. He fixes a gutter, leaves a note (“You’re not invisible”), pays a stranger’s overdue bill. He expects nothing. But the cards keep coming.

Ed’s life: drive drunks home, play cards with his three best friends (Marv, Ritchie, and Audrey—the latter he loves hopelessly), and lose. Every hand. Every race. Every chance.

Third address: a teenage runner, forced by his father to train until his legs bleed. Ed stands at the finish line one dawn, holds up a sign: “YOU’RE DONE. REST.” The boy stops. Collapses into Ed’s arms.
