This is not a casual honorific. Sheikh in its deepest root (from the Arabic shākha , to age or grow old) signifies not merely seniority but the ripening of the self. A Sheikh is one who has walked the ridge of the world’s trials and returned with map in hand—not for his own sake, but for the lost. He is a spiritual elder, a guardian of chains of transmission ( isnād ) stretching back through generations of teachers to the Prophet himself.
